Financing Construction Equipment Packages and Multiple Units

Construction equipment rarely arrives one piece at a time. A contractor winning a new scope may need an excavator, a loader, and a trailer to move them. A company opening a second yard may need a whole starter fleet. A package purchase from one dealer, or from several, raises questions that a single-machine purchase does not. This page covers how to organize and finance construction equipment in multiples. For single-machine guidance, see construction equipment financing.

Why package requests are reviewed differently

  • Total exposure is larger, so the business's overall capacity to carry the payments matters more than any single machine.
  • Mixed collateral: some pieces, like mainstream excavators and loaders, have deep resale markets; others, like specialized attachments or niche machines, are harder to value.
  • Timing varies: units may be delivered at different times or come from different sellers.
  • Purpose is clearer: a package tied to an awarded contract or a new crew makes the business case easy to follow.

How to organize a multi-unit request

  1. Build a unit list. For each item: year, make, model, serial number, hours, price, seller, and delivery date.
  2. Separate machines from attachments. Itemize attachments rather than folding them into a machine price.
  3. Flag trade-ins and payoffs. Note any units being replaced and what is owed on them.
  4. Tie the package to revenue. An award letter, a new crew's expected backlog, or rental invoices the package replaces.
  5. Share a delivery plan. If units arrive over several weeks, say so.

One seller or several?

A single dealer package is simplest: one quote, one delivery coordination, and one seller to pay. Multi-seller purchases are common too, for example a new excavator from one dealer and a used trailer from another. Each seller's documentation needs to be complete. Ashford coordinates with dealers so paperwork and delivery timing line up. How a multi-seller purchase is structured depends on the deal.

Phased purchases

Some contractors plan purchases in phases: core machines now, support equipment after the first project starts paying. Phasing can keep early payments manageable. Mention your plan on the application so the reviewer understands the full picture. Whether a phased or master structure is available depends on the financing source and its review.

Estimating package payments

Add up the amount financed across all units and model the combined payment with a payment calculator. Then test it against your slowest months. Construction revenue is seasonal in many regions, and a package payment is a larger fixed obligation.

Estimates are not offers. Any payment figure shown by a calculator or example is an illustration for planning only. It is not an offer, an approval, or a commitment to provide financing. Actual rates, terms, and payments are set by the financing source after its credit review and may differ.

Hypothetical illustration

Hypothetical and simplified, for illustration only. Not a client story, typical result, or offer.

A utility contractor wins a multi-phase water main replacement and needs a second crew. The owner builds a unit list: a used midsize excavator with a thumb, a new trench box, a used tandem dump truck, and a gooseneck trailer from two dealers. The application includes both quotes, the contract award, the delivery plan, and a year of bank statements. The reviewer evaluates the combined request against the contractor's history and the new contract.
